Say Less, Notice More: Building a Better Connection With Your Dog

Give your dog room to think.

Sometimes, one of the most helpful things you can do with your dog is say less.

It’s easy to fill every moment with instructions: “Sit.” “Come.” “Leave it.” “Look at me.” We want to help, but constant talking can leave little space for our dogs to make choices—and for us to notice what they are communicating.

When you stop talking, you start watching.

You notice a glance in your direction. A change in pace. A pause before approaching something unfamiliar. You begin to see the small moments you might otherwise miss.

Those moments are opportunities to build connection.

Give your dog space to choose

In a safe, familiar setting, pause before giving another instruction. Give your dog a little time.

Perhaps they look towards you, move closer or settle beside you. When they offer a behaviour you want to encourage, acknowledge it with your familiar marker and a reward they enjoy.

Your dog gets an opportunity to discover that choosing to engage with you is worthwhile.

You practise listening through observation. Your dog gets to participate, rather than always waiting for the next instruction.

Try a quiet moment together

This isn’t a rule to stay silent all day. Clear cues, reassurance and cheerful interaction still have their place. The aim is to leave more room for your dog’s choices—and become more aware of them.

The connection can feel almost magical. But it grows through small, repeated moments of noticing and responding.

Say less. Notice more. Give your dog room to think.

At Norse Paw, we help you build everyday skills through positive reinforcement, choice and understanding.
